Kristin Merasty - University of Manitoba's School of Social Work - Social Work Degree
September 2007 - May 2011
My name is Kristin Merasty and I was born and raised in Lynn Lake, Mb, but I moved to Thompson,Mb in November 2000. I have lived in Thompson for about 11 years now, and consider it my home. I graduated R.D.Parker Collegiate in 2004, took a break and worked until I had my daughter in April 2006. After having her I decided to go back to school, so I can make a better life for her and I. I chose to enter the University of Manitoba’s School of Social Work- Northern Access Program here in Thompson, because I found out that I could work in a variety of areas having a Social Work Degree, so I thought this program best suited me. I entered this program in September 2007, and graduated in May 2011.
The program is a 4 year full time program. The only barrier that I found I had was just basically doing everything on my own while raising my daughter by myself. I had help here and there, but I was her sole caregiver, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I managed to get through 4 years of schooling, working a part time job and taking care of my daughter! I thank God for my daughter Kashlyn everyday, because if it wasn’t for her being in my life, I probably wouldn’t have gone back to school, and graduated it. She’s my Inspiration in life!
My long term goal that I have for me and my daughter is to have myself established in a career, and having our own home and such. I still have a little bit of work ahead of me, as I have just graduated, so hopefully within the next couple years we will be where I wanted us to be when I first went to school. After I pay off my student loans, I plan to go back to school to get my education degree!
