Job Profile

As the Recreation Technician, you will be:

  • Helping to enrich the recreational experiences for participants related to an assigned position.
  • Working collaboratively to create a positive atmosphere of inclusion for all participants related to an assigned position.
  • Creatively developing daily activity plans for children, youth or young adults related to an assigned position.
  • Supervising participants, volunteers and equipment/facilities related to an assigned position.
  • Working as part of a dynamic workforce, while gaining valuable work experience.

Your education and qualifications include:
A Grade 10 education. Grade 12 and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience would be an asset.
Proven recreational programming, leadership and supervisory skills would be an asset.
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
Ability to work individually and as part of a team, with minimal supervision.
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

Conditions of employment:

  • Valid Emergency First Aid or higher and a CPR Level C or equivalent certificate. Certificates MUST be valid until September 20, 2024, and must be obtained within the previous 12 months.
    • We only accept qualifications from organizations certified by the following governing bodies:
      • Red Cross First Aid & CPR C
      • St. John Ambulance Basic First Aid and CPR C
      • Lifesaving Society Aquatics Emergency Care and CPR C (NOT Lifesaving Society First Aid)

    • CPR C will be required to be renewed annually from date of issue.

Positions we will be recruiting for are detailed below. Please note that all placements will be determined based on qualifications and vacancy needs.

  • Wading Pool Attendant - Recreation Technician B: As per the Manitoba Health Act, wading pool attendants must be 16 years or older to operate a wading pool. A wading pool attendant is responsible for safety, supervision and operation of a wading pool for children 12 years of age and under. Assets to this position would be ability to communicate effectively in languages other than English, water safety and pool knowledge and leadership skills. Positions are located all over the City of Winnipeg.
  • Youth Leader - Recreation Technician C: Our Youth programs promote interest in recreational activities for youth (ages 13 to 18 years, unless otherwise stated), such as arts, crafts, sports, games, and other interests. Youth Leaders are responsible for organizing and supervising activities with pre-teens and youth at the various sites across the city. Leaders require knowledge and training related to conflict resolution, program planning, sports, games, arts and crafts, and leisure activities as well as the ability to mentor and act as a role model to youth and pre-teens from all population groups. Hours of work are afternoon and evening shifts.
  • Pre-School Leader (L'il Critters & Cartown) - Recreation Technician B or C: Preschool Leaders will organize and supervise preschool activities (ages 3 - 7) at various sites. Leaders require skills and/or training in planning and implementing a wide range of recreational activities such as arts, crafts, sports, music, drama and games as well as the ability to relate to children. Please note: The Cartown program is offered in both French and English.
  • Children's Leader - (Free Play & What's Up) - Recreation Technician A, B or C: The Children's Programs offers children (ages 6-12 years) an opportunity to learn, develop and enhance their knowledge and skill development in the areas of recreation, health, and community awareness. Through various planned activities our recreation leaders will challenge the children's physical well-being, promote positive lifestyle choices, and organize opportunities to learn about their community. Leaders will organize and supervise children's play activities at various sites across the City of Winnipeg. Leaders requires skills and/or training in planning and implementing a wide range of recreational activities such as arts, crafts, sports, music, drama and games as well as the ability to act as a role model to children from all population groups.
  • Building Supervisor & Facility Monitor - (Part-Time) Recreation Technician B or C: Responsible for the monitoring of a recreation facility and/or weight room. Responsibilities may include answering the phone, opening and locking rooms for programs and ensuring safety in a City of Winnipeg weight room. Where applicable the position includes cleaning and inspecting weight room equipment; enforcing rules, guidelines and safety practices. Must have the ability to relate well with the general public and possess knowledge and training related to conflict resolution, working with the community, and vulnerable populations. Other duties may include assisting the public with program registration and cash handling. Hours of work vary and may include morning, afternoon, evening and/or weekend shifts. May be required to lift up to 45 pounds.
  • Equipment Loans & Equipment Delivery - Recreation Technician C: Responsible for filling, packaging, and delivering recreational and aquatic equipment supplies for Leisure Guide and Priceless Fun programs. Must have the ability to relate to the general public, as these positions offer operational support to various Recreation Services-sponsored special events. Requires the ability to work in a team structure, follow safety protocols, keep accurate records and follow work schedules. The position requires a Class 5 Driver's License, steel-toed safety boots, and must be physically capable of lifting 45+ pounds on a regular basis. Generally working out of 565 Watt Street, the position involves both indoor and outdoor work. Hours of work are generally Monday through Friday with occasional weekend hours.
