The Support and Youth Care Worker (SYCW) primary responsibility is to work with a team of SYCW to provide twenty-four (24) hour basic care including meeting the emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs of the youth residing at the MCFCS Shelters, while maintaining a safe, stable and nurturing environment. It is the responsibility of every position to provide, where requested culturally relevant service or assist with access to such service.

Listed below is a summary of the qualifications and responsibilities of the position; complete job descriptions will be available to the successful candidate.

Key Responsibilities and Activities:

  • Schedule medical, optical and dental appointments for each child admitted
  • Provide information to youth of their rights, including information on The Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth, the grievance process, worker contact information, etc.
  • Provide youth with structure and routine as outlined by team leader
  • Plan and participate in activities and group outings with youth.
  • Ability to assist youth with their individual beliefs and cultural traditions.
  • Provide support for youth to promote school attendance and homework, attend meetings, other programming, therapy, recreation, etc.
  • Provide support to youth including: educating youth about at-risk behaviours, encouraging age-appropriate outings for residents, support activities that stimulate learning and teaching/assisting youth with independent living skills
  • Complete and teach basic housekeeping duties, including: cooking, cleaning, food storage and meal preparation.
  • Administer and record medication as directed.
  • Follow daily routine & procedures, including wake-up calls & bedtime procedures

Education and Experience

  • A minimum of Grade 12 Diploma
  • Child and Youth Care Diploma is an asset
  • 1 year minimum experience working with youth
  • Current CPR & Emergency First Aid required
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention would be an asset

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated understanding of Metis and Inuit culture and communities.
  • Ability to show initiative and stay motivated in building positive, healthy relationships with the youth.
  • Ability to recognize and deescalate potentially unsafe situations.
  • Ability to interact with the youth using a strength-based affirming approach.
  • Ability to teach household tasks such as cooking and cleaning.
  • Understanding of separation, loss, trauma and neglect on child development
  • Proven ability to multi-task and prioritize.

Prior to commencing employment, the successful applicant will be asked to provide satisfactory results of a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, a Child Abuse Registry Check, Prior Contact Check and a Driver's Abstract upon hire at their own expense. A valid Manitoba driver's license and the use of a personal vehicle are requisites as travel within and outside the city are required.
